A Very Geeky Wishlist

October means birthday month… which means it’s time for the obligatory birthday wishlist!

Onwards, then!

It All Ends – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2

This is not a movie review.

I don’t think I can review the last Harry Potter movie effectively, simply because I might have put too much sentimental value in this entire franchise to comment in a completely objective manner.

Yeah, best not make me do a proper review.

I met Harry about twelve years ago. I was eleven, same as he was when he first entered Hogwarts. I’ve seen copies of Sorcerer’s Stone several times in the stores, but I always ignored them. I was a cocky eleven-year-old. I read the summary in the back of the book and immediately thought it was “too childish” for me. Yes, yes I know, shame on me.

And then I saw one of my friends reading it in class. What’s so weird is that this friend is a guy who just didn’t like to read. Was the book just THAT good that it even interests non-readers? That sparked my curiosity enough to borrow the book from him and read, at the very least, the first chapter.

I wasn’t able to put it down after the first page.

This collection isn't mine, but I'm sincerely wishing that it is

From there, I religiously followed the series, saw all the movies, haunted fan sites and read fanfiction during the excruciatingly long periods of waiting in between books. I bawled like a baby whenever someone died, hated Umbridge and Cho Chang with a passion, shipped all the pairs that are never going to happen and apologized profusely to the books for thinking so horribly of Snape.

I honestly felt that as I grew up, Harry and everyone else grew up with me. Standing in line for the last movie gave me the same feeling I felt when I was boarding the plane for Canada. Like I was saying goodbye to everything I knew and loved.

Admittedly, the scenes from the final battle could’ve been more epic, Voldemort made the weirdest sounds a villain can ever make (I think it’s the severe lack of a nose), and that fucking epilogue just really never worked for me, but STILL. It’s the last movie, the end of everything. I can’t even begin to describe how much this really means to me and to fans all over the world.

Yeeeah we're stuck with this epilogue forever, aren't we? Oh wellz.

But it’s not really good bye, is it? JK Rowling said so herself.

“Whether you come back by page or by the big screen, Hogwarts will always be there to welcome you home.”

Make sure your kids get to experience Harry Potter, guys. It would be a huge mistake if they don’t.

I.B.A Reborn as Source of the Force

I once mentioned that I’m sidelining as a road manager for a couple of bands. One band is Stories of Now, which I like to refer to as the kuya band. They just recently got into The Jack Daniels Set’s final seven, and will be touring with six other bands. All in all, I’d say their career is pretty smooth sailing (fingers crossed!) so far.

Their little sister band is what I’m actively handling. I.B.A is an electro-pop-punk band that’s been on hiatus for some time. They recently got a new drummer, a new guitarist, and pretty much a whole new sound so we all thought it was only right to debut as a brand new band. After much debate and consideration, we finally decided on naming the new band “Source of the Force”. Yes I know, we like our geekery. Shut up.

The re-launch of IBA as Source of the Force happened last Friday, May 6,2011 at Casa Nami.

I’d say the debut/re-launch was a success! They played a six-song opening set before Stories of Now, featuring covers from bands like Panic! at the Disco, No Doubt, Muse and Paramore. It was a pretty short set, but you can expect more to come on future gigs, they’ll be adding more covers and tightening up their original songs.

A very proud stage-ate I was. The set wasn’t perfect, I know, but the glitches were minimal and everyone, both the band and the audience alike seemed like they were having a really good time. That’s all that matters, really.

Can’t wait for the next!

My Boss is (now) a Blogger

Some three months ago, I was but a prodigal nurse in search of a new calling. It was a bit of a struggle: few employers in non-medical industries were willing to take a chance on flighty nurses who had the tendency to drop everything and leave at the first chance of getting a job out of the country.

Luck smiled on me when I stumbled upon Maerskline and MCC Transport, with the help of my friend Mela. She introduced me to the weird and wonderful world of sales and shipping (more exciting than it sounds, I swear)…and to the coolest boss EVER.

I swear, she reminds me of Rashida Jones

Stella’s pretty young, almost TOO young to be a boss. Once I saw her in action, however, I had no further doubts as to why and how she got to where she is. She’s aggressive and authoritative, and she takes chances, no matter how insane those chances seem to be. Hello, she took on not just one, but two prodigal nurses under her wing, a gamble that nobody else wanted to try.

I’ve seen her get sabaw, I’ve seen her get her party on, seen her shop, seen her with friends, seen her with her beau. I kid you not, she has fans in the office. (Ahem, Karmela, Faith and yours truly). I believe they will not disagree when I say that she is someone we all aspire to become.

Okay I know this post is starting to look like I’m just sucking up to her, but no that is not the point of all this. I just wanted to share just how cool she is first before I promote her newest venture…BLOGGING.

It baffles people when Stella claims that her biggest dream is to be a housewife. “Career woman” and “housewife” are usually far from being synonymous. To some people, the term “housewife” can mean a jobless woman, dependent on her husband for their means of living. While I disagree with this negative and rather sexist connotation, I have seen some instances when being a homemaker is made out to be something to be laughed at and ridiculed.

It is also said that when you are a career oriented person, you may have a tendency to disregard your duties at home. How many movies have you seen showcase a career woman who relied on take-out dinners and househelp to take care of the home?

It just doesn't equate....Or does it?

Knowing the kind of person Stella is, she will prove this nuance wrong. In this day and age, no longer does being a housewife mean just kitchen duties and laundry. Women can be both a career woman and a superstar housewife, and this blog will be proof of that.

Superstar Housewife is still under construction, but from the name itself, I can already surmise that this will feature simple recipes that newly-learning women can try, DIY home projects, travel, and of course, a few kikay (makeup and fashion) tips here and there. This is a site for wives, wives-to-be, girlfriends, and  basically women in general.

Work in progress, but clicky on photo to check http://www.superstarhousewife.com/ out!

I have a blogger for a boss. MAN, did I make the right career change or what?
